Background Info

Lunsar is one of the largest towns in the Port Loko district in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone with a population estimate of 24,000. Lunsar developed since 1933 after the discovery of iron ore mined at the Massaboni and Gafal hills.

The recent past brought successive civil disturbances that led to the intervention of the international community. Various international organizations helped provide an environment for free and fair elections. The war has been declared officially over since 2001. The next step is rebuilding.

The war left Lunsar town devastated, however the town is making remarkable strides towards growth and stability and continues a steady transition from war to peace. Burnt out buildings and limbless children and adults are frequent reminder of the devastation. One important part of Lunsar’s recovery is helping the town to address what fueled the war (primarily illiteracy and deprivation). To help rebuild this community and promote stability, the Lunsar Descendants Organization (LUDO) based in the Netherlands aims at providing social, economic support to encourage children go to school and help in the resettlement and reintegration of the people in this war torn community.
